Debris Removal Information
At its regular meeting on September 18th, the Police Jury approved entering into debris removal and monitoring contracts relating to Hurricane Ike. It is anticipated that debris removal for residents living in unincorporated areas of Calcasieu Parish, will begin next week once designated debris disposal sites have been finalized. An announcement will be made in the near future regarding the start date for debris removal operations. In the meantime, residents are asked to adhere to the following guidelines and procedures for debris collection:
Please separate debris into the following five separate piles, each:
1.) Construction & Demolition Debris (C&D)
2.) Vegetation (Trees/Limbs)
3.) White Goods (washers/dryers, refrigerators, televisions & other electronics)
4.) Metals
Parish officials are asking residents to place their debris as close to the street as possible. Debris should not be placed in drainage ditches, streets or intersections that block the view of traffic. Residents should also be reminded that the debris removal contractor is not allowed by law to work on private property. Large piles of debris placed on private property that cannot be reached from the street will need to be pushed closer to the roadway.
The debris removal contractor is only collecting debris that is specifically related to storm damage. Some debris items may not be acceptable for pickup under the guidelines of the contract. Debris that originates from undeveloped properties or originates from commercial restoration activities is not eligible for collection. It is the responsibility of roofing and construction contractors to properly dispose of the debris from their projects.
Please avoid blocking drainage or creating a roadway hazard when stockpiling debris. Debris placed within the apparent road right of way near the back side of the ditch will be picked up.
For specific questions, call the Police Jury’s Public Works Department at 721-3700.
